Over the Sea to Skye

If you want to arrive on Skye by ferry then there are 2 options open to you:

If travelling by car then you may want to consider the Skye Ferry (from Glenelg to Kylerhea), pictured right. It is said to be the “only manual turntable ferry in the world,” and the scenic drive both to Glenelg and from Kylerhea, make this a must do option, whether as part of a day trip from the White Heather or as the final part of your journey here. The crossing time is only about 5 minutes, but it would not be unusual to have a friendly seal escort as you cross the Kylerhea Narrows!

If you want to arrive on Skye by ferry, but are travelling up by bus or train, then you need to plan your crossing around the train times from Fort William to Mallaig, from where the Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries take 20 minutes to cross to Armadale on Skye. Train and ferry times are dependent on the season, so always contact the companies for details. You can also climb aboard the Jacobite Steam Train in peak season, from Fort William to Mallaig, which is operated by West Coast Railway Company Ltd., for a unique end to your journey on the mainland.

If you choose CalMac Ferries as a foot passenger, please be aware that unless you have a taxi booked you will need to use the local bus service (which does not connect to every crossing) to get from Armadale to the White Heather. This bus journey from Armadale Pier takes approximately 70 minutes and the last ferry crossing it serves bringing you to Kyleakin is the 3.50pm from Mallaig. However, if you would prefer a friendly face waiting to pick you up and help with your luggage, as you alight from the ferry, then pre-arrange for Alasdair (Kyleakin Private Hire) to collect you in his ultra comfy, air conditioned taxi! The journey should then take only 25 minutes and, at the end of a long journey, will be well worth the £23 we are sure! We can make that taxi booking on your behalf or you can contact Alasdair yourself (see below for contact details).
